Description

The 1996 Lynch Bages has a delightful fresh, minty bouquet that does not quite deliver the complexity of recent vintages, nicely perfumed with hints of wilted rose petal developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh from the start with blackcurrant pastilles, a touch of tobacco with a tightly coiled, minerally, slightly sharp finish that perhaps just needs a little more depth. I appreciate that lingering pencil lead note on the aftertaste, completing a solid if unspectacular Lynch Bages. It's the kind of Pauillac I would grab from a restaurant list at the right price. A point.

Tasting note

The 1996 Chateau Lynch-Bages, a celebrated Fifth Growth from the esteemed Pauillac appellation, is a testament to the classic winemaking traditions of Bordeaux. This vintage showcases a deep ruby-red hue, with a bouquet that marries meaty notes and black fruit with an undercurrent of rich cedar. On the palate, it presents a medium to full body with a lively acidity that elevates the concentrated black fruit flavors. The wine's tannic structure is both tight and concentrated, ensuring a finish of impressive length. Matured in French oak barrels for 15 months, with 70% new wood, the wine has developed a sophisticated profile of black currant and sweet pipe tobacco, balanced by an elegant structure and a long, savory finish. With its peak likely reached, this wine promises to maintain its plateau for a decade or more, making it a prized addition to any collection.
