Description
When I first tasted the 1989 Grand-Puy-Lacoste in this blind tasting I thought it possessed a Graves-like tobacco/mineral character. In contrast to the blockbuster, full-blown, massive wines produced by this estate in 1990 and 1982, the medium-weight 1989 is elegant, spicy, evolved, and already revealing plenty of cedar and cassis fruit. A delicious, generously-endowed, low acid wine, it will offer mature drinking now and over the next 12-15 years.

Tasting note
The 1989 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a testament to the elegance of Pauillac. This vintage exudes a fabulous deep, dark ruby-red color that is nearly opaque. On the nose, it offers a restrained bouquet of redcurrant fruit with delicate hints of vanilla and tobacco leaf. The palate is graced with an attractive medium intensity of plumy fruit, while fresh acidity and a mid-weight structure of fine, cedary tannins are seamlessly integrated, providing a surprising amount of grip on the finish. This wine is beautifully poised, reflecting the exceptional terroir of deep coarse gravel and the meticulous care in handpicking and vinification that includes a long maceration period. Matured in French oak barrels for up to 18 months, this wine is a harmonious blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, offering a classic Pauillac experience.
