Producer note:
Vincent Mongeard commented that the 2015 growing season "presented only one real challenge, which was some oidium pressure but after that it was pretty much stress-free. The conditions were hot and dry yet not extreme and thus by the time the harvest arrived the spotlessly clean fruit was ripe and very well-balanced. The vinifications were easy as about the only concern was to avoid extracting too much tannin. Otherwise there isn't anything else to comment upon other than 2015, in my view, is a genuinely great vintage in every respect." The quality of the Mongeard 2015s is consistent with what I generally found at most domaines, which is to say variable but largely very good. (Atherton Wine Imports, www.awiwine.com, Atherton, CA, M.S. Walker, www.mswalker.com, MA/RI/NH, Vineyard Brands, www.vineyardbrands.com, Birmingham, Al; several UK importers).
Tasting note:
Once again there is plenty of wood and menthol influence to the ripe violet, plum and violet-scented nose. The round, delicious and punchy middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the attractively well-balanced and lengthy finale. The wood treatment isn't subtle but it will probably integrate in time.
