This 2012 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru from Chateau Troplong Mondot displays an inky, bluish-purple colour and an intensely concentrated bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and savory notes of licorice, tobacco and dark chocolate. On the palate it is full-bodied and opulent, showing remarkable purity of fruit, polished powdery tannins and a lively thread of acidity that keeps the richness in balance. Oak ageing has added toasted spice and a subtle smoky lift without overwhelming the fruit. The estate’s producer notes celebrate the power of terroir tempered by precise elegance — wines from vineyards on the appellation’s highest point with exceptional exposure and complex soils. Hand-harvested, low-yield production and careful oak maturation produce a wine built for medium–long ageing; expect a wine that will continue to open and refine over the next one to two decades. Decant for about an hour to let the layers unfurl.
