Tasting note: The 1990 Les Fiefs de Lagrange opens with precise, slightly reserved aromas of blackberry, bramble and a hint of black tea, backed by cedar and subtle graphite. On the palate it shows focused definition and tension, medium-plus body, firm but refined tannins and a slightly chewy, moderately long finish. Producer notes: Les Fiefs de Lagrange — created in 1983 — is the estate's serious second wine, made from younger vines (average ~30 years) planted on fine gravel and clay parcels. Vineyard notes: The holdings sit entirely in the village of Saint-Julien across two hills, on pebbly, gravelly topsoils above clay and limestone subsoils in a temperate oceanic climate. Winemaking & ageing: Plot-by-plot vinification in temperature-controlled stainless vats (36–220 hl), traditional ferment at 26–28°C for 18–25 days with moderate extraction (pump-overs, pigeage or delestage) and co-inoculated malolactic fermentation. Blended in January and matured for 13 months with about 20% new oak. Serving & cellaring: Historically drinking window cited as 1994–2006; this bottle is mature—decant gently for about 45 minutes to clear any sediment and to open the aromas. Best with rich roasted red meats and firm cheeses.
Château Lagrange is a prestigious Saint-Julien estate with a long history on Bordeaux's Left Bank. The domaine cultivates broad vineyard holdings (about 118 hectares of red vines) spread across two hills with gravelly topsoils and clay-limestone subsoils. Les Fiefs de Lagrange, introduced in 1983, is the château's focused second wine produced from younger plots; the estate is currently owned by Suntory and practices meticulous plot-by-plot vinification and conservative oak ageing.
