Producer & Estate: Château Cos d’Estournel, a 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Estèphe now under Michel Reybier’s ownership, crafts wines famed for their exotic perfume and majestic structure. Tasting Note: The 2020 Grand Vin opens with an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis, layered with spice notes—nutmeg, cardamom and a hint of black tea—plus cedar, graphite and mineral lift. On the palate it is richly concentrated yet animated by vivacious acidity; dense, velvety tannins support waves of dark fruit, dark chocolate and subtle toasted oak. The finish is long, saline-mineral and elegantly persistent. Winemaking & Ageing: Fermented and matured with careful oak élevage (around 14 months, a significant proportion in new barrels), the wine shows both generous oak-derived spice and integrated structure. Vineyard & Terroir: From Cos d’Estournel’s vineyards on Saint-Estèphe’s gravelly and clay-infused soils with maritime influence from the Gironde estuary, the terroir gives ripe intensity with a cool freshness that balances power and finesse. Drinking Window & Service: Built to age—best cellaring from the mid-2020s into the 2040s–2060s—yet decanting (about 90 minutes) will reward near-term drinking by releasing aromas and softening youthful tannins.
