Tasting note
The 1998 Chateau Haut-Brion is a testament to the grandeur of Bordeaux's Pessac-Leognan appellation. This vintage exudes a medium to dark ruby-red hue, with a nose that captivates with lifted-ripe fruit aromas, dark in nature, and accented by high-toned redcurrant. The palate is greeted with very ripe and high-toned fruit, showcasing a superb balance. The wine is not weighty, yet it carries intense cedar notes and is remarkably persistent. The oak on the finish is so beautifully integrated, it provides structure without overwhelming, resulting in a wine of rich intensity and volume. With a classic deep, dense color and a slightly closed nose that opens up to reveal a handsome complexity, this wine is reminiscent of a seasoned Porto with its caramelized ripe fruit, roasted coffee, and cacao notes. The tannin is superb and still dense, promising a long life ahead.
