Tasting Note: Deep garnet with a hint of brick at the rim, the 2006 Cos d’Estournel opens to layered aromas of blackberries and cassis interwoven with sweet spice, liquorice, cedar, toasted oak and subtle mocha. On the palate it is concentrated and structured — ripe, powerful tannins are balanced by lively acidity and a bright, savory mineral thread that leads to a long, persistent finish. Producer Notes: Cos d’Estournel is famously slow to reveal itself; the estate describes the Grand Vin as demure yet sensuous, unfolding exotic spice, market‑stall fruit and an elegant perfume over time. The 2006 shows that duality — concentrated power tempered by freshness and vivid aromatic clarity. Winemaking: Matured in oak, the wine displays integrated toasted notes and spice from careful élevage. Bottled under cork and made for longevity, the wine’s élevage preserved primary fruit while building structure and depth. Vineyard: From Saint‑Estèphe’s cool, maritime-influenced climate with well‑draining gravels and clay pockets, the vineyard parcels deliver ripe phenolics and mineral tension. Low yields and meticulous sorting contribute to the wine’s concentration and layered complexity. Service: Best enjoyed after a good decant (60–90 minutes) or paired with rich roasted red meats and aged cheeses.
