Tasting note

A classic Saint-Julien from a respected second-growth estate: the 1998 shows a dark ruby hue and a nose of underbrush, tobacco, black currant and dark cherry, edged with vanillin and mineral notes. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and ripe, resolved tannins supporting juicy dark fruit, subtle anise and liquorice spice. Oak is present but integrated after extended barrel ageing. This vintage offers stylish, well-developed flavours and a long finish, though it doesn't reach the deepest concentration of the very top vintages. Best enjoyed now with a short decant to lift aromas.

Château Léoville Poyferré is a historic Médoc estate classified as a Deuxième Cru. Owned by the Cuvelier family, the domaine manages some 80 hectares across Saint-Julien, including a 20-hectare block forming Château Moulin Riche. The team, led by experienced viticulturist and cellar staff and with consulting input over the years, focuses on rigorous vineyard work and careful selection. Estate practices include double sorting at the vat house and extended ageing in French oak to achieve balanced, refined wines.
