A textbook Saint‑Julien expression, the 2008 Château Léoville Poyferré (2ème Cru Classé) shows a deep garnet core with vermeil highlights and an inviting, complex bouquet. Aromas of tobacco, cedar and musk lead, woven with concentrated black fruits and subtle kirsch-like notes. On the palate it is full-bodied and concentrated yet polished — firm, refined tannins support layers of cassis, black cherry, licorice, coffee and warm spice. Winemaking is meticulous: double sorting (hand tables then optical), pre-fermentation cold maceration of about a week and daily pump‑overs through fermentation; the wine spends 18 months in French oak. The estate’s vineyards are dispersed across some 80 hectares of Saint‑Julien (including a unified 20‑hectare block at Château Moulin Riche), with an average vine age around 38 years; careful harvesting in early to mid‑October allowed excellent ripeness in this year. Approachable now with about an hour’s decant, this is a concentrated, long‑lasting wine that rewards short term cellaring and will continue to evolve gracefully.
Château Léoville Poyferré, a historic Second Growth of Saint‑Julien, is family‑owned (Cuvelier family) and run with modern rigor. The estate combines dispersed plots across the appellation — including a notable single block at Château Moulin Riche — with meticulous viticulture under vineyard manager Bruno Clenet. Winemaking is overseen by oenologist Isabelle Davin and cellar master Didier Thomann, with Michel Rolland consulted, delivering polished, classically structured wines aged in French oak.
