Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2008 Mouton Rothschild has always been in the shadow of the ensuing couple of vintages, but I was not the only person at this tasting that commented upon the class in show here. It replicated previous showings: cedar and graphite present and correct, though accompanied by something a little more exotic - eucalyptus maybe? The palate is beautifully balanced, very detailed and extremely fresh. This conveys so much energy and animation before reverting towards a more classic and structured, pencil lead finish. Those in the know will stash up on the 2008 Mouton Rothschild because it is destined to turn into one of the "dark horses" of the decade. Tasted May 2016.

A classic Pauillac from a standout château, this 2008 shows an intense aromatic profile of blackcurrant and blackberry framed by violet florals and savoury notes of cigar box, tobacco and forest floor. Toasted French oak and vanilla emerge with aeration. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and energetic: a lively, powerful attack reveals silky, velvet-like tannins that provide structure without harshness. The mid-palate delivers concentrated dark fruit balanced by a fine mineral thread and elegant oak spice; the finish is long, resonant and harmonious. Producer & winery notes: Made under the direction of winemaker Philippe Dhalluin and owned by Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, the estate follows the château’s long tradition of combining rigorous vineyard work with careful élevage. The 2008 harvest was late but benefited from a warm Indian summer, producing grapes with excellent phenolic ripeness. Vineyard & vinification: The vineyard sits on the Plateau de Mouton, planted on very deep gravel soils with a high density of vines (10,000 vines/ha) and an average vine age around 44 years. Grapes were picked between 2–15 October. Fermentation was followed by 18 months’ élevage in 100% new French oak, giving the wine its toasted, vanilla and cedar notes while preserving fruit intensity and ageing potential. Cellaring & drinking: Already showing attractive complexity, the 2008 will continue to evolve; it rewards decanting (about 90 minutes) now and will cellar gracefully for decades. Best with richly flavoured red meat and mature cheeses.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated first growths. The estate is known for deep gravel soils, high-density plantings and an emphasis on producing wines with both power and finesse.
