The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s 1855 classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050+. Enormous credit is due proprietor Alfred Tesseron for turning things around at this estate in 1994, and continuing to produce first-growth level wines. Pontet-Canet is one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in the Medoc, and Tesseron is such a perfectionist in both the vineyard and wine cellars that his nickname among other bordelais is “Monsieur Bonsai.”

2006 Chateau Pontet Canet (375 ml)

Tasting note: Deep, opaque colour leads to an intense nose of cassis and black plum layered with graphite, tobacco, smoked cocoa and a stony mineral thread. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied: dense black fruit and dark chocolate are framed by ripe yet persistent tannins, savory oak spice and a long, savory finish.
Producer notes: Pontet-Canet highlights intense colour and a pronounced mineral signature. The 2006 shows fruity dominance with added complexity from biodynamic cultivation; the winery describes a structured wine with very smooth tannins and a long savoury finish.
Vineyard & vintage: After a rainy late winter the season warmed quickly, with veraison early and a hot, dry late summer. Storms in early September prompted an earlier pick beginning on 19 September for Merlot. Strategic leaf removal on Cabernet vines during the final sun period helped refine tannins and concentration.
Winemaking & ageing: Hand-harvested and manually sorted, fermentation used indigenous yeasts with a four-week maceration and soft punch-downs; malolactic fermentation completed in vats. Ageing was 16–18 months: 50% new French oak, 35% concrete amphora and 15% one-wine oak barrels—adding spice, texture and freshness to the concentrated core.
Cellar potential & serving: Built for long-term ageing yet showing attractive primary fruit, this wine benefits from decanting (60–120 minutes) if enjoyed now. Pair with hearty grilled or roasted red meats and mature cheeses.
