This successful wine exhibits notes of ripe black currants and smoked herbs. With deep, concentrated, attractive flavors, medium body, sweet tannin, and decent acidity, this is an impressive, classic Graves that should drink well young yet age nicely for up to two decades. It is more structured and linear than the plump 2003, but both are top-notch efforts.

Tasting note

The 2002 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, a Cru Classé from Pessac-Leognan, is a testament to the art of Bordeaux winemaking. With a medium ruby red hue, this wine offers a bouquet of espresso, dark chocolate, and licorice, complemented by red and black plums with an underlying earthy character. The palate is greeted with a soft texture and medium body, leading to a finish adorned with dark red berries and coffee bean nuances. Matured for 18 months in barrels, with 60% new oak, this wine has developed a harmonious balance between structure and flavor. Decant for one hour to fully appreciate its complexity and pair it with grilled red meats, earthy stews, or mature cheeses for an exquisite culinary experience.
