Tasting note: Deep amber in the glass, Yamazaki 18 reveals layered aromas of dried fruits (raisin, apricot), café au lait and Mizunara (Japanese oak). The palate is rich and silky — blackberry and strawberry jam meld with dark chocolate, vanilla and warm spices, underpinned by gentle smoke and polished oak. Finish is long, spicy and smooth. Producer notes: Born at Japan’s first and oldest malt distillery, Yamazaki benefits from pristine spring water and a unique misty climate of shifting temperature and humidity. The House of Suntory matures this whisky in a variety of casks, including Mizunara and American oak, to build complexity and depth. Distillation & maturation: Pure malt spirit distilled at Yamazaki, then matured for 18 years in a mix of oak casks. Extended cask ageing brings concentrated dried-fruit sweetness, oak spice and savory, chocolatey notes. Expect an elegant, full-bodied texture from long maturation. Site & environment: The distillery sits where rivers and valleys meet, giving soft water and a humid, temperate microclimate that gently influences maturation. For best aromatics, pour and let rest 10–20 minutes in a tulip glass; no formal decanting required — simply enjoy neat or with a few drops of water to open up the oak and fruit layers.
