Mortlach's 'The Wee Witchie' 12 Year Old delivers a warmly spiced, chocolate-driven Speyside character. On the nose there are baked apricots, candied orchard fruit and a bright ginger lift, followed by hints of black pepper and herbal complexity. The palate is rounded and mildly savory: milk chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon marry with a dry, oak-tinged backbone from maturation in a mix of sherry and bourbon casks. The finish lingers on chocolate and ginger spice, with a pleasantly warming, savory tail. Best enjoyed gently nosed and given a short rest in the glass to open, this is a bold yet refined dram from Mortlach's distinctive spirit stills.
