Tasting note
Deep, concentrated and classically Pomerol, the 2021 from Château Trotanoy shows a dense, powerful bouquet of black and dark red fruits layered with dark chocolate, toasted oak and subtle truffle and espresso notes. The palate is richly concentrated yet finely tuned: ripe, silky-firm tannins give shape to a wine of notable structure and saline iron-mineral backbone. Produced from old vines on the estate’s distinctive clay-gravel soils (with the impermeable crasse de fer beneath), the fruit was hand-harvested with double sorting, fermented in small concrete vats and matured for approximately 18 months in oak. Expect serious aging potential and reward from cellaring; if drinking earlier, decant for about 90 minutes to open the aromatic complexity. Ideal with robust red meats, game and dishes with savory, umami-rich sauces.
Winery
Château Trotanoy, purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, is one of Pomerol’s most storied estates. The vineyard is famed for a dense clay-gravel mix that can harden to a concrete-like crust; this difficult terroir (hence the name Trotanoy) yields wines of power, concentration and long-term ageing potential.
