Tasting note

Domaine de Chevalier's 2011 is a benchmark Pessac-Léognan red: deep, dark and concentrated with an expressive nose of blackberry, cassis and ripe plum layered with pepper, leather and subtle menthol. On the palate it shows rich fruit, powerful yet refined tannins and outstanding energy; oak is present but well integrated after 16–20 months of barrel ageing (35% new). Made from hand-harvested, carefully sorted fruit on gravel soils, fermentation and plot-based cellar work focus on precision and freshness. Expect a long, mineral-tinged finish and a wine that rewards decanting and further cellaring through the 2020s and into the early 2030s.

Winery

Domaine de Chevalier, a Cru Classé estate in Léognan with records dating to the 18th century, has been owned and run by the Bernard family (and Olivier Bernard) since 1983. Renowned for a pursuit of balance and meticulous vineyard work, the domaine farms gravel over clay-gravel soils, practices hand harvesting and rigorous sorting, and ages its wines in oak to produce both powerful and elegant bottles, with the red being a flagship of Pessac‑Léognan.
