Description

A firm, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with notes of compost, black currants, espresso roast, and some soy, this medium to full-bodied, relatively powerful and concentrated wine shows elevated levels of tannin which have kept me from pulling the trigger and giving it a higher score. I thought everything seemed better balanced prior to bottling, so perhaps the wine is going through a somewhat angular phase of development. It s certainly a big, bold, rather aggressively tannic style of d’Armailhac. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019.

Tasting note

Deep, almost-black hue with a vivid cherry rim. The nose opens on juicy, fresh dark fruits and red berries, layered with cedar, tobacco, espresso and a spicy, vanilla-tinged oak. On the palate it offers a well-rounded attack that builds into forward, tightly-knit tannins supported by clearly defined oak — flavours of blackcurrant, baked plum and subtle herbaceous notes carry through. 18 months in barrels (50% new) lend structure and a long, powerful, richly textured finish. From a 70-hectare estate on deep gravelly soils and a high-density planting of mature vines, the wine shows Pauillac’s classic refinement and age-worthy concentration.

Winery

Château d'Armailhac, part of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild portfolio, occupies some 70 hectares in northern Pauillac. Classified in 1855 under the Mouton d’Armailhacq name, the estate sits on deep gravel and clay-limestone pockets that favor refined structure. Vineyards are planted at high density with a significant proportion of older vines; fruit is matured carefully and aged in oak (18 months, 50% new) to produce concentrated, age-worthy wines.
