Tasting note
Deep garnet in the glass, the 2019 Ermitage Les Greffieux from M. Chapoutier opens with a dense bouquet of black fruits, elderberry, ink and a smoking note of char and cured meat. Black pepper and liquorice weave through the aromatics. On the palate it is concentrated and full-bodied, with powerful yet well-managed tannins, a chiselled stony minerality and bright underlying acidity that gives energy to a long, stony finish. Vineyard and winemaking: fruit comes from the Greffieux plots at the foot of the Hermitage hill, rooted in glacial alluvial terraces of shingles and clay. Grapes are hand-harvested, fully destemmed and vinified in cement vats; a long maceration encourages gentle extraction and only free-run juice is used. Ageing lasts 14–18 months in oak (approximately one third new, remainder previously used), with natural clarification and no fining. Producer notes and ageing: Owned by Michel and Marc Chapoutier, produced biodynamically (Demeter-certified), the wine shows the signature concentration and terroir imprint of Hermitage and will reward cellaring—drink from the near-term window or cellar for decades for more tertiary complexity.
