Tasting note: Deep, resonant and layered — the nose opens with concentrated dried fruits (fig, raisin) and dark chocolate, folded into warm caramel, aged oak spice and a whisper of smoke. On the palate it is full-bodied and plush: rich sherry influence brings candied peel and molasses, while tobacco, leather and roasted nuts add savory complexity. The finish is long, warming and elegantly drying with lingering cedar and spice. Producer notes: This release references the iconic “36 Views” motif and is presented as a limited, small-batch expression from the Karuizawa lineage. Bottled at cask strength and non-chill filtered, it showcases the distillery’s reputation for intensely sherried, highly collectible single-cask bottlings. Production & maturation: Distilled in traditional small pot stills, the spirit was matured primarily in seasoned sherry casks which impart deep fruit and chocolate notes, with secondary maturation in toasted oak to add spice and tannin structure. Minimal filtration preserves texture and oiliness. Vineyard / provenance notes: Though not a wine, the character reflects cool-season maturation in Hitachi’s climate — slow seasonal swings that encourage concentration in the casks. Water and grains sourced locally and careful cask selection are central to the expression’s depth and balance. Serving: Serve neat in a tulip glass or Glencairn. Give about 10 minutes in the glass to open up; add a few drops of water only if you want to coax softer mid-palate notes.

Karuizawa (legacy): Once a small, low-output Japanese distillery, Karuizawa gained international renown for intensely sherried single malts. Production ceased decades ago, making remaining cask releases and single-cask bottlings highly sought after. Known for traditional pot still distillation, long cask maturation and limited-run bottlings that emphasize richness and collector appeal.
