Tasting note
Le Petit Mouton 2017 is the second wine from Château Mouton Rothschild, presenting a deep colour with vibrant crimson hues. The nose opens with pure black and red fruit, then unfurls notes of tobacco, cedar, liquorice and a touch of pepper. On the palate it delivers a fresh, expressive attack followed by a rich, smooth mid-palate where well-integrated, polished tannins provide structure and age-worthiness. The wine spent 18 months in French oak (50% new), which brings gentle toast and spice without overwhelming the fruit. Vineyards sit on the Plateau de Mouton — deep gravel soils, dense plantings (10,000 vines/ha) and an average vine age around 44 years — all contributing to concentration and finesse. The 2017 vintage was early and long, producing wines with ripe, concentrated fruit balanced by refreshing acidity. Best enjoyed after an hour of decanting or cellaring, and pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats and mature cheeses.
