Léoville Poyferré’s dense ruby/purple 2005 is soft, round and juicy, with lots of blackcurrant fruit, plum and Asian spice. It is medium to full-bodied and, along with Léoville Las Cases and Saint-Pierre, probably one of the best St.-Juliens I tasted in this retrospective. It is surprisingly supple and accessible. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.

Tasting note

The 2005 Chateau Leoville Poyferre is a testament to the grandeur of Saint-Julien terroir, offering a harmonious blend of power and elegance. This vintage exudes a deep garnet hue with a bouquet of black fruits, tobacco, and cedar, leading to a palate rich with cassis and a hint of eucalyptus. The wine's structure is underpinned by high acidity and balanced alcohol, while the French oak maturation imparts subtle, well-integrated oak nuances. With tannins that are still firm yet silky, this wine promises a lingering finish with an exhilarating aromatic persistence. Decanting for two hours is recommended to fully appreciate its complexity. It pairs beautifully with robust dishes such as roast lamb or Beef Wellington, and can also complement a mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses.
