Tasting note: Deep brick-red with a crimson rim. The nose is immediately enticing—intense dark and red-fruit aromas of black cherry, mulberry and blackcurrant layered with savoury spice, star anise and subtle coffee/graphite notes. With air a creamy, custard-like nuance emerges, adding an inviting perfume. On the palate it delivers instant presence: dense yet impeccably balanced, a compote of prune and quince and plush dark fruits supported by muscular but refined tannins. The finish is long, mineral-tinged and focused. Producer & vineyard: St. Henri is a multi-regional South Australian blend assembled from flagship sites including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Magill Estate. The 2016 season was marked by a mild, mostly dry growing season with some welcome late summer rains, allowing even ripening across sites and a slightly early harvest in many regions. Winemaking & ageing: Crafted under Peter Gago’s watch, this bottling follows the house St. Henri approach — matured in seasoned large American oak vats (50+ year-old vats) for roughly 12–18 months to preserve pure fruit character while adding subtle oak-derived spice and texture. The result is a wine of density and polish rather than overt oakiness, made to reward short-term drinking and longer cellaring alike. Cellaring & service: Drink now through mid-century with good cellaring. Decant for about 90 minutes if drinking younger to open aromatics and soften tannin. Serve at cellar-cool to cool-room temperature.
