Tasting note: A compelling, old-school Pauillac with a smoky, cigar-box nose layered with tobacco, cedar, black fruits and an autumnal truffle/earth character. Hints of five-spice and liquorice appear with time. On the palate it is full-bodied and brooding — firm, structured tannins frame crisp black fruit and a mineral/iodine edge. Long, taut and powerful, this bottle is still youthful and will reward aeration and further cellaring. Producer notes: From a historic Deuxième Cru Classé in Pauillac, this 1986 was crafted under the stewardship of the Comtesse estate with an emphasis on quality and tradition. The property benefits from distinguished Médoc terroir and a long lineage of careful winemaking. Winemaking notes: A gravity-flow approach was used throughout the cellar to preserve delicacy from reception to barrel. After fermentation the free-run juice is separated and the must gently pressed; selected press wines are integrated to add structure. The blend spent extended maturation in oak, contributing cedar, cigar-box aromas and integrated spice. Vineyard notes: Vines are planted on classic Médoc gravel rises over clay subsoil — light, well-drained soils that force low yields and concentration. The sheltered microclimate beside the Gironde provides ripeness while the gravel ensures elegance and mineral lift. Service: Decant for 60–90 minutes to remove any sediment and allow the wine to open. Best with rich, grilled or roast red meats and mature hard cheeses. Cellaring potential continues — this bottle remains robust and will evolve further in bottle.
