Description
Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Pontet-Canet is a little shut down to begin, but with coaxing this baby is soon firing on all cylinders with a full-throttle nose of chocolate-covered cherries, crème de cassis, boysenberries and spice cake plus tons of kirsch and cranberry sauce sparks and a beautiful undercurrent of emerging tertiary characters: cigar box, sandalwood, chargrill, truffles and cast iron pan. Full-bodied, rich, multilayered and completely seductive, the palate is charged with incredible energy, with a firm backbone of velvety tannins and seamless freshness providing solid grounding and promising a very long life ahead. It finishes with an incredible display of epically long-lasting flavor fireworks. Wow!

A benchmark Pauillac from a biodynamically farmed estate on the high gravel plateau. Inky, dark crimson in the glass, the 2009 opens with a complex bouquet of blackcurrant and blackberry layered with graphite, smoke, licorice and a floral violet lift. On the palate it is simultaneously powerful and refined: concentrated black fruit, firm but polished tannins and a refreshing acidity that keeps the wine precise and lively. Hand-harvested, sorted manually and fermented with indigenous yeasts, the wine underwent a four‑week maceration, malolactic in vat and 18 months in French oak, resulting in an impressively harmonious whole. Owned by Alfred Tesseron and guided by Jean‑Michel Comme with consulting from Michel Rolland, the château continues its low-yield, biodynamic approach — even using horse work in the vineyards — which shows clearly in the purity and tension of this vintage. Expect extraordinary aging potential and a long, persistent finish.

Château Pontet‑Canet is a fifth growth Pauillac estate owned by Alfred Tesseron. Over the past decades it has become synonymous with biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux: 81 hectares certified organic and biodynamic on deep quaternary gravel. The team practices hand harvesting, horse‑drawn work in parts of the vineyard, low yields and low intervention winemaking, producing powerful yet precise, terroir‑driven wines.
