A Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé from Chateau La Tour Figeac, the 2016 displays concentrated dark-fruit aromatics—black cherry, plum and cassis—framed by cedar, tobacco and a graphite streak. On the palate it is dense and layered with fine-grained but assertive tannins, saline minerality and nicely integrated oak. Producer notes: owned by the Rettenmaier family, this estate focuses on careful vineyard work on gravels and silicious soils over blue clay. Winemaking: extraction by pigeage during fermentation; aged 15 months in 225L and 400L barrels. Oaked maturation and cork closure give structure and ageing potential. Drinking window spans from near term to decades ahead; decant for about an hour if enjoying now.
