Across the vineyard hills of Saint-Estèphe, Château Cos d’Estournel stands apart with pagoda roofs, ancient doors from Zanzibar and elephant motifs. Founder Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel exported his wines to India, and the smoother, richer character observed after long sea voyages helped inspire the estate’s enduring Oriental identity.

In Gascon, “Cos” means “hill of pebbles”. The estate sits just across a stream from Château Lafite Rothschild, where deep, exceptionally well-drained gravel gives the fruit maturity and depth. Rather than relying on sheer power, Cos d’Estournel wraps its firm structure in a distinctive velvet texture.
