In 1969, Bordeaux wine merchant Jean Gautreau purchased the near-dilapidated estate, expanding it to nearly 85 hectares. Indifferent to complex official classifications, he even voluntarily withdrew from the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel ranking, famously declaring: "Sociando-Mallet's quality speaks for itself; it needs no official label to validate it."

The vineyards are situated in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne (just north of Saint-Estèphe), directly overlooking the Gironde Estuary. Deep gravel outcrops over clay provide excellent drainage and impart a distinct cool minerality to the wine. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the wine features firm young tannins paired with classic aromas of rich cassis, graphite, cedar, and cool tobacco, crafted for serious cellar aging.
