Description

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2007 Bordeaux tasting. The 2007 La Grave a Pomerol slightly exceeded my expectations. There is a slight aloofness on the nose at first, but with aeration this gradually unfolds to reveal pleasant, black truffle and smoke-tinged black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with leafy black fruit, quite herbaceous in style but in a positive sense, since it is supported by freshness and vitality. This is a perfectly decent early-drinking Pomerol. Tasted March 2015.

Tasting Note: A medium-bodied Pomerol with an initially reserved, slightly herbaceous nose that opens with aeration to reveal smoke-tinged black fruit, black truffle and subtle tobacco. The palate offers leafy black cherry and kirsch-like brightness, supported by fresh acidity and finely polished tannins. Notes of dark chocolate and vanillin oak linger on the finish. Producer Notes: Produced under the Jean-Pierre Moueix umbrella, this bottling reflects Pomerol’s polished, savory profile rather than overt power. It was judged well in several contemporary tastings and shows the house’s attention to balance and clarity. Winemaking Notes: Matured in oak with a noticeable touch of new-oak spice and vanillin influence, the wine combines careful extraction with moderate élevage to preserve freshness. Tannins are firm yet refined, pointing to thoughtful cellar work aimed at structure over extraction. Vineyard Notes: Sourced from Pomerol parcels with well-draining gravelly soils, the site gives concentrated dark fruit and an earthy, mineral backbone. The microclimate brings enough ripeness for ripe black fruit while retaining a cool-stem freshness that keeps the wine lively.
