Tasting note
The 1998 Opus One is a mature Napa classic shaped by a cool, extended season. On the nose it opens with concentrated dark fruit — blackberry, plum and black cherry — layered with cedar, vanilla, roasted espresso and caramel from 16 months in new French oak. The palate shows a resilient mid-palate and silky, sweet tannins with a seamless texture; roasted nut and spice-box nuances emerge with air. Vineyard parcels in western Oakville (including To Kalon, Ballestra and River parcels) are hand-harvested and managed with a mix of traditional and modern practices. Winemaking included 36 days of skin contact and 16 months in new French oak, producing a wine that is supple yet structured. Best approached gently: decant about 45 minutes to settle and reveal tertiary layers. Serve slightly below room temperature with roasted or grilled red meats and aged cheeses.
