Tasting note: Aromas burst with rich, complex layers — ripe dried fruit, mango and orange peel meet butterscotch, warm ginger and mixed spice, with wisps of tobacco, coffee and gentle smoke. On the palate it is full-bodied and malty, offering a creamy mouthfeel, powdery spices, roasted barley and a steady oak backbone that leads to a long, dry, peppery finish. Producer notes: Nikka From The Barrel was introduced in 1985 to capture the concentrated intensity of 'from the barrel' whisky in a small, iconic square bottle — a compact block of concentrated flavour. It is a small-batch blended expression from Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., owned by Asahi, created from a complex formula of more than 100 malt and grain batches. Winemaking/production notes: The blend unites a wide range of malt and grain whiskies drawn from Nikka’s stocks. After blending the components, the liquid is re‑filled into used barrels and married for several months to harmonise texture and aromatics. Bottled at a robust 51.4% ABV, it’s designed to deliver intensity and structure while remaining approachable with a few drops of water. Vineyard/field notes: While not a wine, the backbone of this whisky comes from carefully selected malts and grains grown in Japan and matured in casks influenced by coastal and inland climates. Nikka’s distilleries (notably Yoichi and Miyagikyo) benefit from clean water sources and seasonal temperature swings that help develop depth and balance in the spirit.
