2022 M. Chapoutier CDP Croix de Bois Rouge

Soul Hook: A sun-drenched Châteauneuf with ripe black fruits and warm, polished tannins that beg for a hearty meal.

Why choose it?
- Terroir-driven character -> Galets and sandy red clay deliver concentrated, mineral-backed fruit. Benefit: immediate presence with ageworthiness.
- Thoughtful vinification -> Destemmed fruit, 3-week maceration and use of only free-run juice yield silky tannins and purity. Benefit: power without clumsiness.
- Proven pedigree -> M. Chapoutier stewardship and selective hand‑picking ensures consistency. Benefit: confidence when buying for special dinners or cellaring.

Sommelier’s Private Note: Intense ruby colour opens to blackberry, kirsch and a thread of candied orange, then the Provençal garrigue—thyme and pepper—lends savory lift. The palate is broad and unctuous, alcohol and fruit in harmony, tannins warm and polished from polymerization. Drinks beautifully after an hour’s decant; will reward patience for a decade or more.

Occasion / Pairing Guide: Sunday roast or Cantonese-style roast pork with a glass poured after plating; a BBQ spare‑ribs night where the sauce meets ripe fruit; dinner with aged cheese to finish. In Hong Kong, pair with roast lamb at a home gathering or a celebratory BBQ on a rooftop.

Competitive Edge: Offers Châteauneuf depth and structure at a price below many blue‑chip names, from a house that blends modern precision with respect for terroir. Rarely this much concentration and polish in an unoaked expression.

Winery

M. Chapoutier is a Rhône house led by Michel and Marc Chapoutier, renowned for a terroir-focused approach across the appellations. For this cuvée they practice selective hand-harvest, vinify in concrete vats with destemming and extended vatting to polymerize tannins, and use only free-run juice. The style emphasises pure fruit, provenance and texture rather than oak influence.
