This cask-strength Karuizawa release — part of the 'Fugaku Sanjurokkei - 36 Views of Mount Fuji' series — presents an intense, deeply mature single malt experience. Aromas open with concentrated dried fruit and black cherry, layered with sherry-soaked oak, dark chocolate and an undercurrent of espresso roast. On the palate it’s full-bodied and richly textured: molasses and toffee lead into clove, baking spice and a resolute tannic oak backbone that frames notes of leather, tobacco and cedar. The high ABV delivers warmth and concentrated flavour; a short rest in the glass (around 10–20 minutes) helps the layers breathe and reveals lingering resinous spice and dark fruit on a long, polished finish. Producer notes: From the now-closed Karuizawa distillery, bottles like this are prized for exceptional sherry-cask maturation and depth. This limited-cask expression showcases the distillery’s reputation for rich, sherry-forward maturation and old-school Japanese craftsmanship. Distillation & cask notes: Matured predominantly in heavily seasoned sherry casks, this cask-strength bottling retains the intensity of barrel ageing — dark dried fruit, toasted nuts and spicy oak dominate. Bottled without significant dilution, the spirit’s natural oils and concentrated phenolics are evident. Vineyard / barley sourcing notes: While not a wine, this single malt reflects careful selection of malted barley and traditional pot still distillation. The former Karuizawa site, tucked near mountainous terrain, historically produced characterful mashes that responded exceptionally well to long sherry maturation. Tasting advice: Serve neat in a tulip glass. Add a few drops of water only if you want to open aromatic details; otherwise let the spirit rest in the glass for 15 minutes. Pair with intensely flavoured foods or fine chocolate to match its weight and finish.

Karuizawa Distillery (ceased production) gained legendary status for its sherry-cask matured single malts. Located in the foothills of Japan’s mountainous regions, Karuizawa became known for small-batch pot still distillation and exceptional long-term cask ageing. Bottlings from the distillery are rare and highly collectible, prized for rich dried-fruit concentration, polished oak tannins and a vintage, old-world character.
