Tasting Note: Rich amber in the glass, Corryvreckan plunges into a powerful swirl of peat smoke, tarry espresso and dark fruit. The nose offers intense ropes of creosote, linseed oil, muscovado and smoky bacon, with hints of seaweed, clove and vanilla. On the palate it is chewy and peppery — cracked black pepper, blackcurrant and roasted espresso coat the tongue, while salty, maritime notes and menthol lift the profile. The finish is long, briny and warming, with lingering coffee, treacle and a cigar-like smoke. Producer & Distillery Notes: Named for the fearsome whirlpool north of Islay, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is built to challenge the senses. A cask-strength, non-age-statement expression, it combines standard Ardbeg spirit with stocks matured in virgin French Limousin oak to amplify spice and structure. Awarded World’s Best Single Malt (2010), it remains a flagship for bold Islay character. Winemaking / Maturation: Non-age-statement, matured partly in virgin French oak for added tannic grip and spice, then bottled at cask strength (57.1% ABV). No chill-filtration; cork stopper. Vineyard / Terroir Equivalent: While not a wine, its spirit is shaped by Islay’s peat bogs, maritime climate and the distillery’s traditional maltings. Local peat smoke and Atlantic salinity are inseparable from the malted barley used, giving the dram its coastal iodine and briny backbone. Serving: Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open the aromatics. No decanting required — pour and taste immediately.
