This 2024 Oban Special Release is a 10-year-old, natural cask strength single malt from the coastal Highlands. On the nose it opens with sea-breeze saline notes, sun-bleached oak and vanilla, with hints of damson and strawberry jam. The palate is bold and concentrated — bright citrus (lemon, mandarin peel) sits alongside salty smoke, cracked pepper and baking spice. Though predominantly matured in American oak, a parcel was finished in freshly charred oloroso-seasoned American oak casks, adding a toasted, sherried depth and a touch of candied fruit. At 58% ABV this release is vigorous and expressive; a short rest in the glass (about 20 minutes) or a few drops of water will open up candied lemon, potato chip-like saltiness and extra citrus oils. Expect a full-bodied mouthfeel, vibrant mid-palate spice and a long, warm finish with lingering oak and saline echoes. Produced by Oban (Diageo), this bottling highlights the distillery’s coastal identity and expert cask selection — ideal for those who enjoy a powerful, maritime-influenced single malt.
