2017 Blank Canvas Gimblett Gravels 'Element' Syrah

Bright, cool-climate Syrah from the famed Gimblett Gravels, Element 2017 shows a fragrant, savoury profile: cracked black pepper and crushed violets sit atop red and black forest fruits, alongside smoky, spicy French-oak notes. The wine was hand-harvested from the small Element vineyard — cane-pruned, VSP-trained and farmed with no herbicides or systemic controls — then co‑fermented with a small portion of Grüner Veltliner skins to add white-pepper spice and aromatic lift. Fermentation used 60% whole clusters, hand plunging and native malolactic conversion; the wine matured 14 months in new and seasoned French oak and was bottled without filtration. With crunchy, lifted acidity and defined fine-grain tannins, it’s fragrant, textural and precise — drink now with an hour’s decant to reveal layers, or cellar further to 2030 for more savoury complexity. Limited production (341 cases) and finished under screwcap.

Blank Canvas Wines is run by Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker‑Thomson and focuses on small-batch, site-driven expressions in Hawke's Bay. The Element bottling comes from the smallest vineyard parcel in the Gimblett Gravels district and exemplifies the team's low-intervention approach and attention to matching variety, clone selection and winemaking technique to site character.
