1996 Chateau Margaux is a textbook expression of Margaux elegance and power. Aromas unfold in layers — violet and rose petal on the nose give way to ripe red-currant and raspberry jelly, with darker notes of cedar, tobacco, tar and a spice thread of cinnamon and clove. On the palate it is full-bodied yet refined: a silky texture and taut acidity frame finely etched tannins and concentrated fruit. Oak influence is present but integrated after 18 months of élevage in French barrels, delivering toasty vanillin nuances without overwhelming the wine's core. The season produced vines that endured alternating warm and cool spells before a very dry early September, and picking began late in the month; the result is a wine of purity, harmony and exceptional ageing potential. Bottled September 1998 and closed with cork, this First Growth shows a long, perfumed finish and rewards either a short decant or patient cellaring.

Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux's legendary First Growth estates, renowned for its combination of finesse and power. In the modern era it has continued to refine its style under successive owners; the 1996 vintage was produced under the stewardship of the estate team led by winemaker Paul Pontalier and is now part of the Agnelli Group portfolio. Fruit was harvested late September, vinified using classic Bordeaux techniques and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. The estate's gravelly Margaux terroir imparts a delicate aromatic profile and refined tannic structure.
