A mature Pauillac from the Rothschild stable, this 1986 displays a garnet rim with a slightly brightened edge and an elegantly tertiary bouquet. Aromas of cedar, tobacco, dried violet and a cigar-box earthiness lead into restrained red fruit and subtle spice. The palate is structured and refined — taut acidity and well-knit tannins give balance while oak influence is integrated after 12 months' maturation. Medium in body with a poised, reasonably short finish; decant for about 45 minutes to let aromatics open. Ideal with roast beef, game or mature cheeses.
