1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild

1998 Château Mouton Rothschild is a Pauillac first growth showing a deep purple-red robe. The nose opens with black fruit, blackcurrant jam, leather and tobacco, with mineral and mocha notes emerging on the air. On the palate the wine is powerful yet refined: bright, acidulated freshness drives a mid-palate of surprising volume and depth, supported by smooth but muscular tannins. Winemaking followed classic top-growth practice—harvested late September to early October, matured 18 months in 100% new French oak—resulting in concentrated depth, toasty oak complexity and a polished texture. The vineyard sits on the Plateau de Mouton, deep gravelly soils and a high planting density with mature vines, lending structure, minerality and ageing potential. Decant for 60–90 minutes to reveal layers; pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats and mature cheeses.

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated First Growth estates, owned by the family of Baronne Philippine de Rothschild. Renowned for artistic labels and meticulous viticulture, the property works densely planted, mature vineyards on gravelly plateaus. For the 1998 vintage the team, led then by Patrick Léon, harvested between 28 September and 6 October and matured the wine for 18 months in 100% new French oak, aiming for concentration, tannic structure and long ageing potential.
