The DRC's Romanee St.-Vivant is a tough wine to evaluate. I found the 1990 to have a pervasive earthy, cinnamon, clove, sweet fruit-scented nose intermingled with scents of spicy new oak. Although closed, the wine exhibits great depth, medium to full body, and copious quantities of hard tannins in the long, structured, austere finish. It requires a patient buyer. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2015.

Tasting note

The 1985 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a testament to the art of Burgundian winemaking. With an alluring bouquet of earthy tones, cinnamon, and clove, this wine's aromatic complexity is further enriched by the sweet fruit essence and a hint of spicy oak. On the palate, it reveals a profound depth and a medium to full body, supported by a robust structure of firm tannins leading to an austere yet elegant finish. This wine, while showing a reserved character now, promises a blossoming maturity for those with the patience to wait. Decanting for two hours is recommended to fully appreciate its intricate profile. Pair it with rich dishes like roasted duck or beef bourguignon to elevate the dining experience.
