Tasting note: This matured 2008 from Gianni Gagliardo opens with a compelling bouquet of incense, candle wax and subtle smoke, lifted by bright pink grapefruit and preserved lemon citrus. Underneath are warm layers of sandalwood, baking spice, toasted hazelnut and dark wild berry. On the palate it is full-bodied and concentrated: the tannins remain substantial yet polished and silky, framed by firm, lively acidity and a streamlined, lingering finish. Producer & winemaking notes: From Gianni Gagliardo — a producer rooted in classic Barolo tradition — this Serre bottling is made with a focus on site expression and layered structure. Fermentation and extended maceration extract ripe phenolics and aromatic compounds, followed by careful ageing in oak to round and integrate the tannins. Bottle maturation has softened primary edges while preserving an energetic core. Vineyard notes: Fruit comes from hillside vineyards in the Barolo zone, where calcareous-clay soils and the region’s cool diurnal shifts lend freshness and fine tannic structure. Hands-on viticulture and selective picking aim to deliver balanced ripeness and concentrated flavours that speak of place. Serve after a short decant (~45 minutes) to allow tertiary aromas to open. A versatile table companion, it pairs best with rich, tomato-based pastas, braised or roasted red meats, game ragù and aged hard cheeses.
