Perched well above the Napa Valley fog line, this mountain estate has forged legendary, high-elevation wines since 1888. Masterminded by acclaimed winemaker Chris Carpenter, this 2017 vintage embodies the raw power and nobility of rocky mountain terroir. Hand-harvested into small crates to protect fruit integrity, the fruit underwent gentle cold soaking, native yeast fermentation, and 20 months of patient maturation in French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The glass reveals an intoxicating profile of dark crushed cherries, cassis, rich espresso beans, and wild sage, interlaced with classic Howell Mountain volcanic minerality. On the palate, a broad textural impact commands attention, underpinned by chiseled yet seamless mountain tannins and vibrant, lingering acidity that carries effortlessly into a long, peppery finish.
