Bright, juicy and unapologetically Barossa — this Woodcutter release shows ripe dark-fruit perfume with an undercurrent of mocha and a hint of maple-syrup sweetness. On the palate it is full-bodied and chewy, with integrated, finely textured tannins and a lively acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Flavours move from blackberry and blackcurrant to savoury notes of olive tapenade, black tea, rosemary and iron-rich earth, finishing firm and persistent.
Producer notes: Torbreck celebrates the up-and-coming vineyards of the northwestern Barossa rather than the century-old vineyards of their flagship cuvées. The Woodcutter is praised for its succulence and richness, but also for offering complexity and texture at an accessible price point. The winery’s name nods to the Torbreck forest near Inverness, with Celtic-inspired naming throughout the range.
Winemaking: Fruit is hand-harvested from multiple sub-regions across the northwestern Barossa. Fermentation takes place in cement, wooden and stainless vats for about 6–7 days before basket pressing. The wine matures for 12 months in well-seasoned French oak hogsheads and foudres, and is bottled without fining or filtration, retaining a generous palate texture.
Vineyards: Sourced from several Barossa sub-regions (Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch, Ebenezer), the blend reflects a mix of cooler and warmer sites that bring both succulence and savoury depth. Decant for around 45 minutes if drinking now; will cellar through the 2020s. Pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, game and mature cheeses.
Torbreck Vintners draws its identity from the Barossa Valley and from a love of rugged country lore — the name itself is a nod to the Torbreck forest near Inverness. The house sources fruit from across the northwestern Barossa, working with both newer vineyards and classic sites to craft wines that balance ripe richness with savoury texture. Ownership is listed under Jack Cowin and the winery is known for hands-on viticulture and traditional oak maturation.
