2009 Château Léoville Poyferré is a classic, powerful Saint-Julien from one of the Médoc’s great estates. Deep garnet with purplish highlights, the bouquet opens with crème de cassis, ripe dark berries, a lifted floral thread and graphite-tinged minerality. Layered notes of dark chocolate, espresso and toasted oak follow. On the palate the wine is concentrated and full-bodied, showing voluptuous glycerin, silky yet firm tannins and a long, spicy finish with an appealing freshness. Winemaking blends meticulous double sorting, a week of pre-fermentation cold maceration and attentive pump-overs during fermentation; the wine was matured 18 months in French oak. The estate’s holdings are dispersed across some 80 hectares in Saint‑Julien, including a single 20‑hectare block that yields particular terroir expression; average vine age is around 38 years. Owners from the Cuvelier family oversee a traditional yet carefully modernised regime that aims for balance and longevity.
