Tasting note

Tasting Note: Deep ruby-purple in the glass, this 1996 bottling shows ripe black-fruit aromas—cassis and prune—lifted by spice and a fine thread of oak. On the palate it is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with silky, now-integrating tannins, a lively acidity that keeps the fruit focused, and a long, classic Margaux finish. Producer Notes: Château Kirwan harvests and sorts fruit by hand, vinifying parcels separately to preserve site character. Fruit is double-sorted and selected on a vibrating table; half the barrels used for élevage are renewed each year to balance freshness and oak influence. Winemaking Notes: Fermentation used indigenous yeasts at approx. 31–33°C. Malolactic fermentation was carried out partly in new oak barrels and partly in stainless steel; the wine was aged for 20 months in barrel with roughly 30% new oak. Vineyard Notes: The best parcels—mainly gravel soils with some clay—produce low yields and concentrated fruit (yield c. 55 hl/ha). The 1996 harvest ran from Sept 24 to Oct 17 in an exceptional vintage for the Médoc, giving ripe, structured fruit well-suited to Margaux’s elegant profile. Serving Suggestion: Open and decant about 45 minutes to let tertiary aromas emerge. Pairs beautifully with roast or braised red meats and mature cheeses.
