Tasting note: Powerful and unapologetic, this 25-year-old cask-strength bottling from Laphroaig opens with thick peat smoke, medicinal iodine and a gust of coastal brine. Beneath the smoke sit notes of charred oak, vanilla caramel, dark chocolate and a hint of dried citrus. On the palate it is oily and full-bodied — concentrated layers of peat and spice give way to warming oak tannin and a long, saline finish that lingers for minutes. Producer notes: Distilled at Laphroaig on Islay and released as a limited 2017 25-year expression, this is a statement of place — the island's turf fires and sea air are front and center. Released at cask strength, it showcases the distillery’s classic medicinal and maritime profile with the added depth and polish that long oak ageing provides. Winemaking notes: Matured for a quarter-century in carefully selected oak casks, the spirit has drawn complex wood spice and concentrated sweetness while retaining assertive peat character. Bottled at natural cask strength, a few drops of water or a short rest in the glass will coax out secondary aromatics and open the texture. Vineyard / island notes: Barley from Scottish fields and the peat of Islay’s bogs are integral to the spirit’s DNA. The island’s salt-laden air, windy exposure and traditional floor-malted barley combine with Laphroaig’s signature peat smoke to create a whisky of pronounced maritime intensity and rugged, savoury complexity.
