2004 Chateau Pichon Lalande
2004 Chateau Pichon Lalande
Soul Hook: Pauillac elegance—powerful structure with polished restraint.
Why choose it?
1) Classified heritage -> Proven pedigree from a 2ème Grand Cru site, giving long-term ageing and auction-room style prestige.
2) Terroir-driven balance -> Gravel soils and a cool estuarine microclimate deliver fresh mineral lift and refined structure for food-friendly drinking.
3) Meticulous cellar work -> Gravity-flow vinification and a precise press regimen produce plush texture with layered spice from careful oak ageing.
Tasting Note (Sommelier's private note): Deep ruby with a narrowly focused bouquet of black cherry, cassis, dark cocoa and an undercurrent of espresso and tobacco. The palate is medium–full, fleshy and layered—ripe dark fruit framed by vibrant acidity, polished yet present tannins and a saline, graphite thread that keeps the finish long and clean. Oak is noticeable but integrated after extended ageing in barrel.
Producer & Winemaking: From a historic Pauillac estate (2ème Grand Cru Classé), owned by the de Lencquesaing family, the estate uses a gravity-flow approach from reception to barrel. After fermentation the free-run juice is separated and press wines are selected carefully; ageing is completed in oak for about 15 months to add structure and spice.
Vineyard Notes: Vines planted on classic Médoc gravel over clay, benefiting from the protective influence of the Gironde estuary—well-drained soils that force concentration and precise ripeness.
Occasion: Perfect for a private chef’s steak dinner, anniversary toasts or a refined corporate tasting—pairs beautifully with rich red meat and matured cheeses.
Competitive Edge: Offers Médoc Grand Cru finesse and cellar-age complexity at a more accessible market price than many top-label rivals—an astute buy for collectors and serious drinkers.
Serving tip: Decant ~45 minutes to breathe; serve at 16–18°C. Drink now through its peak (cellaring potential remains).
