Vintage 2005 from Château Coutet (Premier Cru Classé, Barsac) is a luminous, fully developed dessert wine that marries intense botrytised fruit with elegant balance. On the nose: orange marmalade, honeyed apricot, roasted pineapple, vanilla and butterscotch threaded with clove and warm spice. The palate is richly textured—creamy vanilla crème brûlée and caramelised stone fruit, yet kept lively by bright, lemony acidity and a clear mineral thread. Oak influence is present but well integrated after careful barrel fermentation and maturation.

The estate: Château Coutet sits in Barsac where a cool, humid microclimate encourages noble rot. Hand-harvested over thirty to forty days (September to November) in successive passes, the fruit is gently pressed and sent to barrel for fermentation and an extended maturation period. Experienced cellar-masters oversee blending, seeking a balance between concentrated sweetness and refreshing acidity. The result is a dessert wine with impressive length and aging potential—drink now after a short rest or cellar further to 2050 as recommended by critics.
