Brightly aromatic and powerfully built, the 2022 "Bodyguard" from DAOU shows toasted-pecan and baked-blackberry notes lifted by warm cardamom and a backdrop of French oak. On the palate it is dense and toasty — espresso bean, ripe black fruit and a peppery spice thread through firm but polished tannins. Made under winemaker Daniel Daou and matured in French oak, this bottle reflects DAOU’s sun-soaked Paso Robles sites and an intent to craft concentrated, layered wines. The winery ages the wine on oak to add grip and savory toast, finishes with a traditional cork closure, and presents a wine that rewards a short decant to open its aromatic range. Best enjoyed with meaty, savory dishes that can stand up to its richness.
