Tasting note: Corryvreckan is a high-octane Islay dram — rich amber in colour, it opens with torrents of tarry peat smoke, creosote and linseed oil, then unfurls dark fruit, muscovado sweetness, and saline seaweed. On the palate it is chewy and peppery: smoky bacon, black espresso, dark berries and licorice coat the tongue, finishing long with black coffee, sea salt and a persistent smoky heat.
Producer notes: Named after the fierce Islay whirlpool, Corryvreckan is crafted to be bold and elemental. A flagship Ardbeg bottling, it has won international awards and sits in the permanent range since 2008.
Winemaking / distilling notes: A single malt distilled at Ardbeg, matured in a mix of casks including virgin French Limousin oak which contributes structure and spice. Non-age-statement release bottled at cask-strength level; expect pronounced alcohol warmth balanced by rich oak and peat phenols.
Vineyard / terroir notes: Born on Islay’s west coast influence — peat bogs, sea spray and a cool, maritime climate shape the malted barley and the smoky character. The coastal saltiness and wind-swept peat are integral to its signature profile.
Serving suggestion: Serve neat or with a few drops of water; allow the dram to rest in the glass for 10–20 minutes to open up. Best enjoyed slowly alongside strongly flavoured food.
